In the movie “The Martian”, astronaut/botanist Mark Watney is left behind by his crew who think he died in a freak storm accident. In his efforts to get home alive, he has to solve problem after problem:

  • Contact NASA
  • Ration food
  • Grow food
  • Make water
  • Leave Mars
  • Intercept with crew
  • Slow down
  • Speed up
  • Etc etc

He never gives up, despite the staggering odds against him. How? He works each problem one step at a time.

Chronic illness is no different. Every time I wake up, I evaluate the situation – pain, nausea, dizziness, weakness, tachycardia, etc. And I work the problem.

Some days feel so hopeless. But days like today remind me that if I keep working the problem, relief will come.

Whatever problem you woke up with today – keep working it. Work it until you either solve it or it is no longer relevant.
