Mast Cells are important components of the immune system. They are triggered by infections, toxins, and even stress – essentially telling the body to attack the foreign invader.
Many Lyme patients develop Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), a condition that causes mast cells to become hyperactive, reacting to every stimuli, including foods, smells, even the very supplements and medications the person is taking to battle their sickness.
MCAD symptoms include:
- Severe pain
- Neurological symptoms like numbness and tingling
- Headaches
- Anxiety & depression
- Sensitivity to sound, light, food, chemicals, etc
- Digestive issues
- Sore throat, swollen glands
- Tinnitus
- Extreme fatigue
- Cognitive difficulties
- Insomnia
- Shortness of breath or “air hunger”
If you have chronic Lyme disease and are having these symptoms or notice that your body has become sensitive to everything (food, sounds, smells, light, etc), I encourage you to look into MCAS a little more and talk to your doctor about options.
There are many resources available to help combat MCAS with OTC medications and natural supplements as well.
Below are a couple of links to get you started. And remember, you’ve been sick a long time – you can’t expect to get well overnight.
