Today marks the 50th anniversary of the return of the Apollo 13 astronauts to earth. So, in true Hollywood form, there have been documentaries and space movies on all day – and in true Shawn form, the stories have me comparing chronic sickness to the successful failures” of space travel.

In all these stories, there is failure – usually multiple things have to go wrong to be devastating enough for the big screen – and there is a series of trial and errors before a solution finally presents itself.

I’ve started another round of new medications which have shown me some improvement, but as always, we keep having setbacks – headaches, increased heart rate, dizziness – and we keep working though each problem as it comes up.

But what keeps me from giving up?

Jim Lovell, the commander of the Apollo 13 crew, was once a navy pilot. Flying a Banshee off a carrier, his instruments had failed and even though he knew the general location of the ship, it was night, there was low visibility and he lost radio contact. His cockpit lighting failed as well and he had all but given up hope when he saw, turning in the wake of the carrier, green phosphorescent glow of algae – literally guiding him to the carrier.

“You never know what events will transpire to get you home safely.”

My health often seems hopeless. But we don’t know what events may transpire to get to me well.
