I read this quote today on an email I got from Earth Runners (barefoot sandals that help you ground).

“Be the designer of your world and not merely the consumer of it.” – James Clear, Atomic Habits

They went on to challenge us to get 1% better every day.

I love that concept. Many of my days over the last decade have been just about survival. This last year, I started making changes that I hope are improving my overall health. It’s slow – it’s hard to see 1% improvement. And there are days when I feel like I’m going backwards.

These two thoughts remind me that change had to be deliberate.

  • Designing your own world
  • 1% improvement every day

My world can feel so chaotic and overwhelming. Change has to happen. But when I look around, the overwhelming is too overwhelming!

I can’t handle it. I’m too sick to do a complete overhaul. I have to be deliberate about changing not the big picture, but the little pieces that are contained inside the big picture.

Think about the world as a whole. If you wanted to change the feeling of community in entire world, that would be such an overwhelming undertaking.

But what if you start in your neighborhood, on your street? What if you gather your neighbors together and start to build community there?

And what if your neighbors began to build community in the town you live in?

And what if the town began to change the county – the state – the country?

Your life is the same concept. It’s too much to change today. So start small. Find one thing – just one – and make that change today.

Tomorrow – maybe you find something else to focus on. Or maybe you need a few days to just let that first change take hold.

Do what works for you. Just keep moving forward.

Below is a link to things I’ve been working on. I was told recently it feels like too much. I get it! It is a lot.

So pick one thing and make that change today. Stick to it. And when you’re ready, pick one more to add to it.

If you change one thing every month for the next year, you will have made 12 changes.

If you change one thing every week for the next year, you will have made 52 changes.

Think about that! Make a list of changes you want to make and start tackling them.

And give yourself a break if you have set backs or just have to take a break.

You’re not failing – you’re adjusting.

PS: It’s ok to ask for help. This is a reminder for me.
