VIDEO: Azure Standard standards – this is an excellent resource for learning about some of the basic problem ingredients in our common diet.

Environmental Working Group (EWG)

The EWG is a great resource for understanding toxins in our daily life. They shine “a spotlight on outdated legislation, harmful agricultural practices and industry loopholes that pose a risk to our health and the health of our environment.”

FOOD

Apeel and Organipeel are coatings applied to some fruits and vegetables to help produce stay fresh longer. There is too much unknown about these products and quite frankly, it’s just one more man made component being added to our food.

It is odorless & colorless so you may not be able to tell if it has been used.

Below is a link to a list of stores and whether they do or don’t use these products.

You should always wash your produce with baking soda OR vinegar (not both) to help remove any potentially harmful pathogens.

Coffee

Did you know coffee has tons of chemicals and toxins? 90% of regular coffee has been found to have mold and mycotoxins. Gurlgonegreen explains the importance of certifications and how to select a clean coffee (incl decaf!).

Grass-Fed Meat

Our bodies need a 4:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 to function optimally. Grass fed meat and dairy provide that. Grain fed is 20:1. Too much Omega 6 can cause inflammation, heart disease and obesity. Omega 3 can help reduce inflammation and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease as well as Alzheimer’s.

KITCHEN

PYREX vs pyrexthere is a difference!

PYREX is made with borosilicate glass, it is more heat-resistant and less prone to breaking due to any sudden changes of temperature.

pyrex is made with tempered soda-lime glass, which makes it more durable than regular glass under temperature fluctuations, but not quite as heat-resistant as borosilicate glass.

Candles

Candles can cause toxins – this may not be a concern for most people, especially those who don’t use candles daily. But for those of us who already have a high toxin load, choosing non-toxic candles is really important.

Key things to look for:

  • WAX: Look for coconut, beeswax, or soy candles. Blends of those are great so long as they’re clearly only those. Candles that just say “wax blend” should be avoided.
  • WICK: Make sure the wick is made of organic, unbleached, 100% cotton, hemp or wood without a lead weight.
  • FRAGRANCE: The label should be specific about which fragrances are used. Natural fragrance is a catch all and could include toxins such as formaldehyde. Synthetic fragrance is also bad. Look for a list of specific essential oils and make sure you’re not allergic to those.
