What Do You Need?

I bet that’s something you’ve never thought to ask yourself. And I bet not many other people have asked you that either. So don’t you think it’s about time someone did?

HSPs try so hard to conform to the world – wanting to be like everyone else, thinking if you’re not, something must be wrong with you.

HSPs are not like the other 80%! And thank God for that. HSPs bring kindness, compassion and creativity to a world that is sadly lacking. So maybe it’s time you figure out how to nurture and grow those gifts, instead of stifling them.

And that really does start with answering the question – what do you need?

Your list may be different than mine (especially since I’m an extravert HSP), but this is what I’ve come up with so far:

  • I need happy interactions and good conversation with people – especially my close family
  • I need simplicity in my home – less clutter, more organization, and decor that is calming and peaceful
  • I need uncomplicated time to wind down and recharge without the pressure of overwhelming thoughts – particularly important after a busy day or overwhelming event
  • I need function that gives me a sense of purpose – for me, it’s writing or research or finance (yeah I know, that doesn’t sound creative, but the details of working through numbers lets me use a part of my brain that needs exercise)
  • I need a safe outlet to communicate emotion without judgement
  • I need to recognize situations that are overstimulating and have tools to either calm my body or exit the situation (and I need to let myself be ok with doing that)

These are all absolute necessities for me to live a functional life on a daily basis. Without them, I both physically and emotionally crash.

Honestly, my life is not totally dialed in on any of these. But I think of this as my blueprint for building a life where every day, I’m ok.

And knowing the construction is underway gives me a little bit of peace and a whole lot of hope.

If you are feeling like life is overtaking you, sit down, take a deep breath and draw your blueprint. Identifying your specific needs is the first step to building your HSP haven.

You’re so worth it.
