As challenging as HSP can feel, it is moreso a beautiful gift – a treasured trait that gives perspective like none other.

As with most things, perspective plays a big role in how we feel about being HSP. Our society has a strong focus on ambition – the louder we are, the more people listen. We expect our children to conform to classroom environments that are loud, bright and busy. We encourage after school activities and we assume every child should have lots of play dates. And we expect them to always be happy and go with the flow.

So someone born Highly Sensitive in this society is natural going to feel flawed – HSPs thrive in a controlled environment where lights and sounds and smells are minimal. They need alone time – recover time, recharge time. They should be encouraged for their abilities to see subtle differences and be given time to be creative.

Highly Sensitive is not a flaw. The HSP nervous system is more finely tuned, allowing them to experience the world more thoroughly. They are able to understand and absorb, not just overstimulation, but beauty, knowledge, love, peace, and joy (things which are often taken for granted).

Life in this society is hard for an HSP -not because they have a challenge or are “flawed”, but because our society doesn’t understand the fundamental concept that experiencing life more deeply is a gift.

It takes work, and discipline, but life for an HSP can be more beautiful, more serene, and more enjoyable than most will ever experience.

Find the treasured pieces of HSP that make you special and develop those – because your HSP gift is desperately needed in this society (whether others realize it or not).
